Red Tide: Unido 1-0 Malay Team

Seems like Sunday morning games always start late. And it also seems like Sunday games bring about the most injuries, be it due to accidents or foul play. Yesterday's game was no exception, save for a serious incident that marred the victory we scored over the opponents, who seemed to be more interested in shoving, elbowing and assorted foul play over enjoying a proper kickabout.

We adopted the same, one-wing formation that brought us success against the Sepoys, but it was not very effective as the opponents were quick, and managed to cut out a few passes before they reached the wings. But long balls forward caught them out a few times, and it was only due to some poor finishing by Alex that we did not trouble the goalkeeper too much.

The opponents were quick on the break as well, but resorted to foul play as we took the ball off them and cleared our lines. Although they showed some great skill and ball control, the game was marred by some disgraceful shoves and reckless tackles that would have drawn yellow, or even red cards, in competitive matches. As such, credit to the referee who spotted the dirty tricks as the opponents tried their best to feign innocence.

A horrendous error resulted in our one goal. Seng released JLo on one of his marauding runs down the flank, and he slid a low cross into the box. The keeper fumbled under a challenge from Alex, who gleefully tucked the ball into the net from close range.

The pushing and tackles came fast and furious, and Leslie was the first casualty, having to go off after being sandwiched by the keeper and a defender's shove resulted in a twisted knee. I was next, falling victim to a knock on the ankle during a 50-50 challenge. The most serious came in the second half, as again, in a 50-50 challenge for a high ball, the opponent's knee slammed into JQ's lip, resulting in a split lip which required stitches at the hospital.

Nevertheless, the remaining 11 players (including an injured Leslie who played through the pain) gave their all, and despite Seng's best efforts to allow the opponents a way back into the game with his 10-minute spree of crazy passes, we managed to hold out for a scrappy 1-0 win.

Football

Brothers,

I appreciate all your concern and eagerness to help... Thank you for even wanting to cover my medical bill.. However, I think it won't be necessary.

What happened to me this morning could easily happen to anyone of us. I kept reminding everyone to be careful and I thought I was being so as well. I didn't expect such a vicious challenge. Yes it was dangerous and although I feel frustrated and worried, I was glad that it happened to me instead of anyone else and it wasn't life threatening.

It will take more than swollen ankles and split lips to deter me from playing. However, it serve as a reminder to everyone, including myself, to be careful and protect ourselves. And in the event if things get out of control, I believe we might as well abandon the game. For once, I'll admit that there are other many things in life more impt than football.

I should be able to remove the stitches by this Friday. A scar will be on my upper lip but hopefully thats all it will be. If nothing goes wrong, I should be able to rejoin the squad for our next weekend match. Meanwhile, enjoy the Finals later!

Medical funds for JQ

Hi everyone,

believe most of u guys heard the news about JQ's vidic injury.

Our captain went over to CGH and got a couple of stitches for his efforts, but i believe he should be fine now. His total medical bills were 75 bucks.

I do think that we should all try to contribute to help defray the cost of his medical treatment since he was injured in the course of duty, and had to go A&E which is quite serious.

Thus the posting to call for voluntary contributions to JQ's medical fund. Do not need too much from everyone, if everyone comes up with $5 it will be just nice to cover his treatment.

But as i say, this is voluntary so dun fret over contributing to it =)

those who are willing to contribute pls bring the additional funds down on our next match day =)

Sweet revenge - Unido 3-1 Sepoys

We got stuffed 5-1 the last time we played the Sepoys, hence it was no surprise when Reubs, who'd just came back from Australia and was playing his first game in 2 weeks, said "Today is come to kena thrashed one".

Cap was away so KS took over the armband for this one. It was an experimental formation we put in, as Hong Loon was allowed to roam the entire left flank, with Kelvin shifting into the centre to provide support to Reubs and Seng. JLo was as usual, bustling down the flanks and firing crosses in for Leslie and Alex.

Alex's persistence paid off early in the game, he robbed a defender and fired a low shot into the back of the net for a deserved 1-0 lead. This did little to discourage the opponents as they surged forward, the number 11 on the left looking particularly threatening. And it was from one of these runs that the ball fell to the number 10, who promptly fired a dipping shot into the top corner to make it 1-1.

This spurred us into action, as KR replaced Kelvin and I replaced HL on the left, while WR replaced Guan on the right. We reverted to our 4-4-2 and attacked down both wings. And it was from one of these attacks that Alex hit the post. But we failed to capitalise on the added attacking advantage and the score was 1-1 as the match went to half-time.

We reverted to the conservative 4-2-3-1 formation for the second half, Kelvin replacing JLo and moving into the centre, giving WR the flank to cover, while KR stayed up on the left. And not two minutes after the restart, we were ahead.

Seng, who was having a poor game by his standards, played a wonderful pass to KR, who cut inside the defender and slammed the ball past the keeper for a 2-1 lead. The goal seemed to settle us into a bit of a slumber as we allowed the opponents to come at us. But we put the result beyond doubt as Seng scored from his own rebound to make it 3-1.

The opponents threatened to score as the number 15 had one or two gilt-edged chances, but failed to convert them both as he either slipped or miskicked at the critical moment.

The final whistle came as a relief for both teams as the match ended 3-1 to us.

"Ref, you got license or not?": Unido 3-1 Team Trinity 'B'

We'd played Team Trinity 'A' before, scraping out a 2-1 victory at The Hiding Place. What we had in store this time, was instead a younger and more vibrant Team Trinity 'B', again at the same location. What we did not expect was the opponents to turn up with a foreign import, and still have not enough people to put out a full team.

Their bright green jerseys were as bright as the sun as the match got underway. And with our very first chance, we scored. Jialiang supplied the pass, KR the finish. It was probably the yellow jersey curse that got us as we started to fall asleep and misplace passes, although a few cross-field passes from wing-to-wing did find their mark. And we paid the price for our complacency, their nippy number 6 getting in behind KS to chip Jackson for our first goal conceded in 2 matches.

From then, it was all one-way traffic as they gradually tired. The wingers were darting onto passes and creating dangerous openings, and it was from one of these runs which earned us a corner. Jialiang's inswinger was met by a firm header by Seng, who saw his header deflected past the goalie.

It was all one way traffic as we vigorously pushed the ball forward seeking our third. All our good work was undone by the very obviously biased referee, who called an offside almost every time an excellent ball caught the Trinity defence napping.

However, we were not to be denied as Leslie broke away from an onside position to put in the third.

It could have been more but for some awful refereeing, some good goalkeeping and some poor finishing, most evidently from Derek, who skied a cross when it seemed easier to tuck it into the back of the net.
